Defying Death is Zambezi

"Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight."

- David Livingstone, 1855

Parker and Jared at Mosi-oa-Tunya ("Smoke that Thunders")

My friend Jared met me in South Africa for a couple weeks. After a day in Johannesburg, seeing Soweto and shaking off his jet lag, we set off for Zambia and Zimbabwe, setting up base in Livingstone.   Livingstone is the home to Mosi-oa-Tunya, or Victoria Falls, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World

We didn't quite know what to expect.  It is the dry season on the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls is "running low".

Needless to say our minds we're blown.  It is one of the coolest places I've ever been, for sure.  The pictures don't really do the experience justice.  But, we'll try...

Since it was the dry season, you can really see the falls in a different way.   And by see, obviously I mean something a little crazy.  The Devil's Pool, to be exact.

The view from the Zimbabwe side sets the stage quite well:

Look closely in the upper righthand side.

And now, what it looks like from the Zambian side:

Needless to say it is one of the crazier things I've, or Jared has, ever done.  Holy smokes was it awesome!

We celebrated with High Tea on Livingstone Island, which is situated in the middle of the Falls.

After tea, we retreated back to the banks of the river for sunset drinks:

The View of Mosi from a much safer distance (the mist from from the water going over the falls)

That's the taste of Zambia and Zimbabwe for now.

We're back in Jozi now and have met up with another friend, Evan, to head out on Safari.  There are a few more stories to share, but we leave early in the morning and I just wanted to share one of the best parts of the last week.

Now that I have my bag (and most of what was supposed to be in it), I'm in some fresh clothes and will work on bringing you all up to speed on the rest. (Hint:  MORE ANIMALS!!!!!!!! And, most likely more shots of the Falls!).

  1. Parker, The falls look amazing. Mind-blowing even in the pics - I can only imagine what it would be like in person. Michelle is on her way today. Have fun. Cheers to you both, Suz

  3. In my opinion, seeing the falls from both the Zambian and Zimbabwean side are a must. If you can, that is. Though I've been told, and read, that the view is pretty obscured on the Zimbabwe side when it is high water due to all the mist in the air. As some say, Zambia Wins Again (ZWA).
